Welcome to Kayaking Course - Recreational Kayak Skills
Thanks for your interest in our "Welcome to Kayaking Course" through OutdoorsNB Inc.
To help you determine if this course is right for you, consider the following:
Skill level target: New Paddlers, with little or no prior experience in kayaks and no prior courses. You are an occasional paddler who, at this point, may not plan to move on to more courses after you complete this one.
Gear level target: All paddlers in Canada must, at a minimum, have:
-
An appropriate kayak for an adult (We rent these with gear if you don't have one)
-
An appropriate 2-bladed paddle (We sell these if you don't have one)
-
A Transport Canada OR ULC OR TC OR Harmonized approved PFD/Life Jacket (We sell these if you don't have one)
-
A safety kit conforming to Transport Canada requirements for paddle craft (We sell these if you don't have one)
This 6 hour course is geared towards the weekend warriors who are new to kayaking and may have purchased their first kayak, most likely a recreational kayak (what many refer to as a river kayak (not a white water kayak, but they are welcome too) and want to learn the fundamentals of using it. These kayaks most often have no bulkhead (complete wall inside the kayak that separates the front or back or both from the cockpit) or only one bulkhead behind the seat.
We created this course as our other courses require two bulkheads to prevent the kayaks from filling with water when we do capsizes and rescues.
